We had this very high quality reproduction of Alfred Stevens' portrait - Mary Ann - Wife of Leonard Collman - painted in oils on canvas for one of our customers.
Unstretched canvases are typically supplied rolled up in a tube so, before framing it, we first had to stretch it around some stretcher bars. These have specially-designed tension wedges in the corners so that, over time, if the painting ever starts to sag, they can be adjusted in order to 'tighten up' the canvas, thereby maintaining its flat surface.
To achieve a period look, we chose a neo-classical style moulding from our Traditional English Handmade Collection, painted black and gold to perfectly mirror the contrasting colours between the portrait's subject and background: Morland.
We're very pleased to say that our customers were delighted with the result!
As proud members of the Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG), we've been stretching and framing oil paintings since 2006. Visit our Showroom in the historic market town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire to discuss framing ideas for your artwork.
