It never ceases to amaze us just how much time and effort our customers put in to their cross stitches, and this detailed winter scene is no exception.
Firstly, we stretched and laced the fabric, ensuring the lattice of stitches was taut enough to prevent the fabric from sagging whilst also loose enough to ensure it stayed flat and didn't pucker. If this isn't done correctly, the cross stitch will never sit properly under the mount or inside the frame.
Despite being more time-consuming, this method is completely reversible, and also adheres to the standards set by the Fine Art Trade Guild, of which we are proud members.
Although some framers use adhesives to simply stick the artwork to an undermount, we don't, as they can easily damage and discolour the fabric. Neither do we press, iron, or bond fabrics to the undermount, as these can spoil the three-dimensional effect of the artwork.
With the exception of our new aluminium collection, all our picture frame mouldings are made from wood. Some are stained or painted, or have a specialist finish applied such as a foil or a veneer, while others are intentionally left 'barefaced', like the one used for this piece. Its cool tones perfectly echo the cold colours in the snowy landscape, as does the pale taupe colour of the mount.
Extra depth was added to the scene with the addition of a subtly decorative silver colour slip moulding.
To finish, glazing is always added to protect the cross stitch from dust and accidental damage.
