Weekend football matches were a big part of mining life. Every pit village had its own team and league. This picture is based on my memories of the fields at the back of Staveley Works. My grandparents lived near there at Devonshire Cottages (now a landfill site) and I'd see the miners playing football against the backdrop of the pit buildings and equipment.
