When men were inspecting or sinking a shaft, they would be lowered down it in a big bucket. You can see photos of this from as late as the 1980s. It was a dangerous job but the men in the photos always seemed to be laughing and smiling, keeping a sense of morale and companionship going under difficult circumstances.
