Mark Spain had a strong interest in art from a young age. After graduating from Medway College of Art where he trained in technical graphics, Spain's first work came as a freelance illustrator producing originals for posters, book covers and greeting cards.

In 1984 his interest in printmaking as an alternative discipline became established and he set up a studio in Kent to concentrate on making original etchings, with inspiration coming from the natural unspoilt areas of rural Britain. He travelled abroad and his interest in wildlife was developed culminating in a series of etchings taken from drawings of various game reserves in Kenya.

With his popularity growing, he began to exhibit extensively in the UK and overseas, and, as time went on, began to experiment with different forms of imagery, also exploring a wider range of media.

His figurative oil paintings were extremely well received, and he was quickly signed to one of the UK's leading publishing houses. His first Limited Edition release sold out in record time, and soon after he was awarded the Fine Art Trade Guild Award for Best Up and Coming Artist. His work now hangs in galleries and private collections across the world

Now established as one of the UK’s most acclaimed artists, and continuing to experiment with different techniques and subjects, recently incorporating cityscapes within his figurative works, Mark says, "Having experimented with many forms of imagery in recent years, figurative work has been the most challenging and satisfying. My main goals are always to create a certain amount of movement within the image, with particular emphasis on setting a mood and atmosphere."
